Licensing Process and Regulations in Arkansas
The process of earning your home inspection license in Arkansas is overseen by the Arkansas Home Inspector Registration Board. The first step is completing a Board-approved curriculum that includes at least 80 hours of training in an in-person classroom setting. This training accomplishes two purposes: 1) to prepare you for the competency examination and 2) to equip you with the knowledge needed to conduct comprehensive home inspections and accurately report your findings.
Once your training is complete, you’ll need to take the competency examination. This two-part exam consists of the National Home Inspector Exam (NHIE) and the ASHI Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics Examination. Texas A&M Texarkana, in partnership with ICA, will prepare you for these exams with comprehensive training, a 200-page online study guide and 700 practice questions.
After passing the home inspector competency exam, you’ll need to get insurance. The Arkansas Home Inspection Board requires applicants to purchase at least $100,000 in general liability insurance coverage. This protects you and homeowners if something goes wrong during an inspection. Proof of insurance must be submitted along with your notarized registration application.
Once your registration is approved, you’re ready to start practicing! Arkansas requires home inspectors to complete 14 hours of continuing education every year, at least 8 of which must be completed in person with a Board-approved instructor.
